Admissions Procedures

ICC is an open-door institution. A student may be admitted to ICC upon meeting one of the following conditions:

Kansas residents who have completed a four-year course of study in an accredited high school. A transcript of high school credits, showing date of graduation, must be on file if you are applying for scholarships and/or financial aid or if you plan on graduating from Independence Community College.

Non-Kansas residents who are graduates of an accredited high school and who can present supporting evidence to indicate that they can benefit from the educational program and contribute to it.

Transfers from other colleges who have completed an application for admission form and submitted copies of official transcripts for all prior college hours.

Part-time high school students who have junior status from an accredited high school and have a written recommendation from the high school principal may enroll in a limited number of college courses.

Kansas residents whose high school class has graduated and who have successfully passed the General Education Development (GED) Examination.

ICC requires that all incoming freshman take the COMPASS test to ensure proper placement in classes. The COMPASS test, administered free of charge, is given throughout the year. If there are extenuating circumstances regarding testing and recommended placement see ICC's Basic Skills coordinator.

Please send application form, financial aid forms, official high school transcript, official college transcript and other requested material to the Admissions Office at the following address:

Credit Sources

Correspondence Study

A maximum of 15 semester hours of correspondence, extension, or military credit will be accepted toward graduation.

Credit By Examination

Students whose educational experiences appear to have given them proficiency in a course equivalent to that ordinarily attained by taking the course in a regular class may be granted permission to take a comprehensive examination in the course.

To qualify for examination, a student must:

  1. Enroll in the specific course and pay regular tuition and fees.

  2. Have the approval of the Dean of Instructional Services, the Division Chairperson, and the instructor of the course.

Not all courses are available for credit by examination.

Credit for Military Service

The State Department of Education permits the granting of school credits for military service. In the granting of credit, ICC adheres to the recommendations of the American Council on Education. A maximum of 15 semester hours of military service credit may be applied toward graduation.

Transfer of Credits from Non-Accredited Institutions

Credits from postsecondary institutions not accredited by a regional accrediting association may be accepted for evaluation and possible transfer of credit.
