Ham radio—also known as amateur radio—provides an independent, non-commercial way to communicate when it matters most. Beyond being a hands-on hobby for licensed enthusiasts, ham radio enables technical experimentation, reliable connections during disasters when other networks fail, and a unique form of recreation and social connection. With no dependence on the internet or cellular service, it fosters practical skills, community, and a vital lifeline in critical situations.

“Most communications today depend on commercial infrastructure. Ham radio is different,” said Alfred Crawshaw, course instructor. “It’s a system you can set up, understand, and use when the power’s out or the grid is overloaded. It builds confidence, practical know-how, and community resilience. The Independence Amateur Radio Club is excited  to offer this course for anyone willing to learn more about amateur radio.”
