The Independence Community College (ICC) Fine Arts Department is proud to present its winter theatre production, Across the Lake, showing November 21-23 in the Black Box Theatre located in the William Inge Center for the Arts.
Directed by Ashley Hovell, Across the Lake is a moving and emotionally resonant story about family, memory, and the truths we carry with us. The production explores the difficult spaces between who we were and who we become, and the courage required to confront the past.
“Across the Lake is a poignant show about family, the secrets we keep, and the trauma that sticks to us,” said Hovell. “This cast is doing amazing work finding the nuances of family relationships and the complicated ways these characters hide their truths from one another. Across the Lake is a play for everyone who has felt loss, grief, a longing for the simpleness of childhood, and the power to finally use your voice to stand up for yourself,”
Synopsis:
Cousins Laurel, Cass, and Whitney have stayed away from their Nana’s lake cottage for a decade—ever since a painful final summer together at eighteen. Now, returning to clean out the cottage before it is sold, they are forced to face what truly happened that weekend and how it has shaped each of their lives. Cass has run to Los Angeles in an attempt to bury her guilt. Whitney has curated a picture-perfect life online to avoid her own insecurities. Laurel is quietly unraveling after the end of her first serious relationship. As unresolved tensions surface and Whitney’s controlling husband shows up to “set the record straight,” the cousins are pushed toward a long overdue confrontation—one that could finally lead to understanding, reconciliation, and the beginnings of healing.
